It is a combination of four resistances connected in the four arms of a square.A source of e.m.f is connected across two diametrically opposite terminals while a galvanometer is connected between the other pair of terminals.In unbalanced position a current flows through the galvanometer and in a balanced wheatstone bridge there is no current through the galvanometer.
